Physical Description

Vellum, 11 in. by 8 3/8, consisting of 139 leaves. The quires, signed with letters, are 13 in number. There are from 22 to 32 lines in each page.

Hand 1 (major, Estrangela script): The writing is a stiff, formal Estrangela, with occasional vowel points (e.g. fol. 12 b, ܓܶܠܴܝ̇ܽܘܢܐܳ; fol. 111 a, ܡܰܦ̣ܩܶܕ; fol. 131 a, ܡܢ ܩܲܪܷܐ ܠܰܩܲܪܷܐ).
Hand 2 (minor, ): See additions.
Decoration (Illustration): On fol. 57 a, there are two rudely drawn figures, representing the Annunciation of the Virgin; and on fol. 114 b, a head.
Decoration (Ornamentation): There are also coloured ornaments in various patterns at the end of several lessons; e.g. foll. 4 a, 6 b, 13 b, 15 b, 57 b.

  • The lessons are taken from the Peshitta, with the exception of a few at the beginning, which are from the LXX. and the Harklensian versions.
  • On the margins of the manuscript Greek words have been occasionally written by the scribe; e.g. foll. 3 b, ϹΤΑΜΝΟϹ (Hebr. ix. 3, Harkl.), 75 a, ΕΠΑΦΡΑ (Coloss. i. 7), 104 a, 109 b. The word ܐܣܛܪܢܝܐ (1 Tim. v. 6), from στρῆνος, στρηνιάω, is explained on the margin of fol. 119 a by ܦܘܿܢܩܐ ܘܙܢܝܘܬܐ.

Addition 6 (Fol. 1a): On fol. 1 a, there is written in rude Arabic characters, with scarcely any diacritical points: نظر في هذا الكتاب العزيز الخاطي سركس الراجي رحمة الله غفر الله لمن قرا وترحم عليه و علي جميع اولاد المعمودية "The sinner Serkis (Sergius), who hopes for the mercy of God, looked into this holy book. May God forgive him who reads,” etc.
